GardenThumbnailLove in Action:
service through ministries and volunteering

There are many opportunities to serve at Seattle Unity Church.  A list of ongoing groups is available to you on a separate page. This page provides additional descriptions of the many ways to participate in service.

Service is essential for spiritual growth. It is a path to God as important as prayer

volunteers1

Through the act of volunteering and serving in our church community, we have an opportunity to identify, develop, and express our spiritual gifts. When one gives from his/her gifts, it creates more joy, is easier, and benefits others. When we serve, we practice spiritual principles in a safe, empowering environment and then go out into our world to be “Love in Action”.  When possible we work in teams so we get to know one another while we put into practice the spiritual principles we are learning on Sunday or in classes. Every effort is made to match a person’s gifts and personal passion and life situation with the team and task that needs to be done.

Outreach

The generosity of members of our congregation consistently support the following community programs through financial donations as well as through their donations of talent and time.

  • New Horizons – a program for homeless street youth ages 0-18 years. Once monthly we purchase the food and prepare and serve dinner to 70+ youth. Additional information about this wonderful organization is available at nhmin.org.
  • Mary Magdalene – a day shelter for homeless women. We buy, prepare, and serve breakfast on every 5th Saturday. We also donate $50 monthly to Mary Magdalene. For more information for the many programs supported here, see volunteersolutions.org.
  • Compass Center works with transitional housing. We supply them with donated toiletries. compasscenter.org
  • Yearly School Supply Drive – we successfully completed participation in “Project Kool” by collecting 500 sets of markers and even had money left over! We also donated 25 backpacks and the school supplies to Cascade People’s Center (here in the South Lake Union neighborhood.)
  • Youth Care – a program to build confidence and promote self sufficiency for homeless and underserved youth by providing shelter, hope and support in the Puget Sound area. YouthCare.org
  • Yearly coat, hat and glove drive. (This year we are also adding shoes to this drive.)
  • Since 2007 we have made the Heifer Fund a part of our Christmas collection.
  • In July & August, we have our School Supplies Drive. We are gathering 500 backpacks with school supplies. Please contribute what you can to the bin in the Narthex. Thanks!

Female volunteers are needed for the Mary Magdalene program who will help with preparing and serving the 5th Saturday of the month breakfasts.
